Web Coverage Server (WCS)

The WCS supports interchange via the Internet of satellite image data in their original format without any loss of information, even where data compression and tiling techniques are used to optimize client/server exchanges. This enables images to be processed on line (or after downloading), for example to adjust dynamics, make geometric corrections, build classifications or calculate slopes.

Web Map Server (WMS)

The WMS is optimized for data display and lets users navigate seamlessly through an entire image, using compression techniques that imperceptibly degrade the original data. It prepares data (tiling and pyramid layering) and then greatly compresses them for easier transfer over low-bandwidth networks. The user sees a more or less degraded representation of the original data.
