Soyuz launch complex

To mark the first Soyuz launch from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, AstriumServices presents a SPOT 5 satellite image acquired 24 September 2011, showing the Soyuz launch complex. This inaugural flight will be carrying two satellites for the Galileo system.

Built under a French-Russian agreement signed in 2003, the Soyuz launch complex or ELS is a close replica of the launch pad in Baikonur. The site covers an area of some 120 hectares, with nearly 20,000 sq.m of built infrastructure and 650 m of rails.

The space road in French Guiana

The space road serves the various launch centres. It transports the launchers to the launch pads. The road runs from the town of Kourou, through the Ariane 4, Ariane 5 and Vega launch centres, to the new Soyuz launch complex outside Sinnamary. The SPOT 5 satellite acquired this image on 17 September 2009.
