TerraSAR-X to Monitor Italy’s Motorways

TRE ALTAMIRA to provide TerraSAR-X satellite monitoring service to SPEA Engineering S.p.A.

TRE ALTAMIRA has been awarded by SPEA Engineering S.p.A. - an Atlantia Group subsidiary with over 50 years of experience in integrated engineering services for transport infrastructure - a contract for monitoring over a key motorway corridor in Central Italy, relying on TerraSAR-X satellite data.

This monitoring will be based on the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique which consists in generating surface deformation maps using images acquired by TerraSAR-X at different dates. The unique level of detail offered by this technology coupled with the sensitivity and resolution of TerraSAR-X data will help to measure millimetre-scale changes in deformation. This is crucial to support risk management, by identifying unstable areas that could potentially affect structures.

“Airbus Defence and Space Intelligence is actively supporting our customers in continuously bringing the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique in the mainstream structural engineering services. Furthermore, the TerraSAR-X mission with its high reliability, resolution  and accuracy  is the ideal choice for operational and cost-effectiveness in monitoring of large infrastructures. Furthermore,  Airbus Defence and Space Intelligence, is also delivering and developing into mainstream industry, its Surface Movement Monitoring  service (InSAR) but also as an alternative support in adverse conditions such as remoteness, climate, wilderness or when the social/political environment cause unwarranted risks for operating staff,” said Oliver Lang, Head of SAR-Monitoring Services.

Key Benefits:

  • Reliable and continuous subsidence monitoring in urban areas with small time intervals (11 days)
  • Wide-area overview allows the identification of non-predicted hot-spots of surface movements
  • Very high sensitivity to even small-scale changes (millimetre range)

Surface Movement Monitoring has become an important part of risk management when planning infrastructure projects. It increases the efficiency and safety of the excavation works and assists in asset protection. Thanks to high-resolution TerraSAR-X satellite data, we both provide large area coverage and zoom-in capabilities to identify the smallest details. Combined with unrivalled geo-location accuracy, this allows highly precise change detection and monitoring.
