On 23rd January 2017 there were 108 active forest fires registered in Chile. A dry summer combined with record temperatures offers the perfect conditions for such ferocious fires. It is estimated that more than 100,000 hectares of forest has been destroyed. Despite the efforts of the four thousand firefighters, soldiers and emergency personnel who are working to extinguish the raging fires, three fatalities have already occurred. Many homes have been evacuated and some have been completely destroyed. At least 200 people were evacuated from Pichilemu after a fire destroyed a commercial pine and eucalyptus forest not far from residential homes. The government have requested international aid in order to manage the large scale fires.

Argentina is also experiencing uncontrollable fires with large scale destruction.
