Monitoring of the Barra da Tijuca construction site, image analysis and annotated plans

The construction of the sports facilities in Barra da Tijuca park was monitored from July 2012 to May 2016, with monthly programming of Pleiades. The annotated plans were produced immediately after the acquisitions to identify three levels of activity: excavation and earthworks, infrastructures under construction and completed infrastructures. Four examples of annotated plans are shown below.

Analysis of the Pleiades image of 24 August 2014 shows the location and excavation of numerous foundations around the site. The earthworks in progress cover more than half the surface of the site. Construction of the media and telecommunications centre is well advanced.

On the image of 9 October 2014, raising of pillars for several stadia is under way. Concrete pillars can be differentiated from steel beams.

The installation of different types of covering and roofing is clearly visible on the Pleiades image of 11 February 2015. This construction phase involves large quantities of material and reveals several storage and handling sites.

On the Pleiades image of 5 August 2015, the finishing touches are being made to the stadia. The traffic and transport development works are apparent and constitute the structural backbone of the site. A main pedestrian route winds its way alongside the stadia. A tramway line is under construction to the north of the site.
