In the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria
Pleiades observes the destruction of the Temple of Baalshamin
The temple of Baalshamin, a jewel of the Greco-Roman city of Palmyra in Syria, had disappeared from the Pleiades image taken on 25 August 2015, compared to the archive image acquired before the destruction on 22 May 2015. The new image was received two days after the Department of Museums and Antiquities announced the destruction of the temple by explosives.
The programming of Pleiades in Instant Tasking priority mode gives a rapid picture of the situation on the archaeological site, which is currently inaccessible. Situated above the hotel area, the Temple was built in 17 AD to honour the Phoenician Lord of Heavens: Baalshamin.
