TerraSAR-X / TanDEM-XServing Your Imaging Needs
By beginning of August, TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X will complete the systematic data acquisition campaign for the generation of the WorldDEM™.
Flying in a uniquely close formation flight, the two satellites covered the 150 Mio km² of the Earth’s surface seamlessly at least twice and locally even four times in just 3.5 years. The data will be processed into a highly accurate, homogenous Digital Elevation Model setting a new accuracy and quality standards for global elevation data. The programming specialists at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) spent countless hours of computing and simulations to devise the sophisticated acquisition plan, which secured the data for the WorldDEM™ as well as the continued acquisition and delivery of TerraSAR-X data to users worldwide.
The TerraSAR-X (launched 2007) and TanDEM-X (launched 2010) radar satellite missions are implemented as a Public Private Partnership between the German Aerospace Center DLR and Airbus Defense and Space.
DLR is operating the TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X missions and is responsible for the scientific exploitation of the data. Airbus Defence and Space is responsible for the adaptation of the elevation model to the needs of commercial users worldwide and is now generating the global WorldDEM database.
The conclusion of the systematic data acquisition for the WorldDEM™ will thus enable enhanced utilization of the two sensors from August 2014 to serve the distinct application needs of commercial customers and scientists around the world.
And a further enhancement is already on the horizon: at the end of 2014 the Spanish PAZ satellite (owner and operator: HisdeSAT) will join TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X in the same orbital plane.
Together the three satellites will be operated in constellation providing enhanced acquisition capabilities for monitoring and mapping applications. The constellation will also significantly reduce the revisit time supporting daily revisit for image intelligence and 4 / 7 days revisit for interferometric applications (i.e. surface movement monitoring or coherence change detection)
