TerraSAR-X-based Change Detection of Panama Canal, Panama

Multitemporal Change Detection Map of three TerraSAR-X High-Resolution SpotLight acquisitions of Miraflores Lock, Panama Canal.

The colour scheme results from a colouring of each of the three acquisitions. This makes areas, where significant changes have taken place during the time period, stand out strongly. Consequently the ships passing through the canal and the locks are coloured.

Significant changes can also be identified west of the locks, where excavation and construction work is ongoing in connection with the Panama Canal Expansion project. This project, proposed by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and started officially in September 2007, will double the capacity of the Panama Canal by 2014 and will also allow larger ships to pass this important waterway. The currently two lanes will be complemented by a third lane, the construction of which is estimated to cost appr. US$ 5.25 Billion.
