TerraSAR-X-based Flood Extent Map of a Flooding of Fitzroy River, Australia

Flood Extent Map derived from two TerraSAR-X acquisitions: the first recorded on May 14th, 2008 before the flooding event and the second recorded on January 7th, 2011 at the height of the flooding of Fitzroy River in Queensland, Australia.

The dark blue areas depict the regular river bed of Fitzroy River and the coastline, the light blue colour depicts flooded areas. The flood extent was derived by semi-automated image analysis of pre- and post-event TerraSAR-X data. Flood extent in urban areas may not be detected due to SAR geometry.

The area affected by the floods across Queensland is the size of France and Germany combined and more than 200,000 people have been affected. Months of rain have left vast areas under water, flooding residential area, roads, airports, houses and agricultural areas. Even though the peak has been reached experts predict that it will take weeks for the water to flow off.
