Mappers and refugee camps

At the centre of a humanitarian crisis

This year’s drought in the Horn of Africa has seen growing numbers of refugees flocking to camps in Kenya and Somalia. SPOT 5, FORMOSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X satellite images have been published to document the expansion of these camps and to support NGOs and humanitarian relief teams.

Airbus Defence and Space has contributed to three programmes:

  • YouMapps
Two SPOT 5 images and a FORMOSAT-2 image acquired in 2007, 2009 and August 2011 have been made available to mappers through a YouMapps project. These images are centred on Ifo, the largest refugee camp in the world, near Dadaab in Kenya. The project is being supported by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). OpenStreetMap is an Internet-based collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world.

  • GMES Emergency Responses
